Implementation of ICD-9 to ICD-10 crosswalk

Crosswalking between ICD-10 and ICD-9 should be done primarily to assist with transitioning to ICD-10 and analyze data that spans the conversion time period. To assist with transitioning, crosswalking between the code sets will assist one with identifying the differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10. If it develops the encounter forms or “superbills”, crosswalking will assist by creating new forms for ICD-10.
The ICD-9-CM system is an International Classification of Diseases (ICS), currently used in the United States, which enables providers to code specific diagnoses. It provides codes to classify diseases and a wide variety of signs, symptoms, abnormal findings, complaints, social circumstances, and external causes of injury or disease. Under this system, every health condition can be associated to a unique category and given a code, up to six characters long. Such categories can include a set of similar diseases. But according to the Department of Health and Human Services, ICD-9 no longer meets the needs of today’s health care system because of its limited ability to accommodate new procedures and diagnoses. Since 1988, the USA had required ICD-9-CM codes for Medicare and Medicaid claims, and most of the rest of the American medical industry followed suit. On January 1, 1999, the ICD-10 (without clinical extensions) was adopted for reporting mortality, but ICD-9-CM was still used for morbidity.
Keeping all of the above uses in mind, it becomes quite clear that a classification system that provides greater coding accuracy and specificity is greatly needed. So, it was a deliberate attempt to map the conversion from ICD 9 to ICD 10 to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the healthcare system by leading to cost reductions for or improvement in benefits from electronic healthcare transactions.
